Chron’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is often confused with other inflammatory bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis, thus making it difficult to diagnose. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Crohn’s disease is characterized by an inflammatory reaction throughout the entire thickness of the colon and bowel wall. This inflammation can penetrate deeply into the affected organ, causing pain and diarrhea.

Symptoms associated with Crohn’s disease include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding (which may lead to anemia), weight loss, malabsorption syndrome and nutritional deficiencies. The onset of Crohn’s disease is typically between the ages of fourteen and thirty. Cases of this disorder tend to be 2-4 times more common in Caucasian whites than non-Caucasian, and 4 times more common in Jews than non-Jews.

Crohn’s disease is typically experienced as flair-up, with attacks occurring every few months to every few years. Over time, if the disease is active, bowel function can gradually deteriorate, with the risk of cancer increasing by 20 fold.

Scientists believe that chronic imbalances in the intestinal flora set off a chain of events that, in the end, damages the intestinal mucosa. This theory is strongly supported by the parallel in the number of cases of Crohn’s and other inflammatory bowel disorders and use of antibiotics over the last 50 years. In turn, it has also been found that the incidence of Crohn’s disease is higher in cultures consuming a “western diet”, while it is virtually non-existent in cultures consuming a more primitive diet. Studies also reveal that patients with Crohn’s disease were found to be individuals who habitually ate, prior to the onset of symptoms, more refined sugar, less raw fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber when compared to their healthy counterparts.

While the exact causes of Crohn’s disease is still unclear, there is much that can be done to lessen symptoms and even put this disorder into remission. The goal for treatment of this disorder is to control inflammation, correct nutritional deficiencies and relieve symptoms such as pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding.

Recommendations for Wellness

1) An elimination diet, such as Gottschall’s Specific Carbohydrate Diet have been shown to reduce the symptoms experienced within 3 – 12 weeks.

2) Avoid sugar, both white sugars, and the sugars contained in white flower, white rice etc.

3) Keep a food/flair-up journal. Identify foods you are eating, or your emotional state just before and during a “flair-up”. In time, you may find a pattern forming

4) To reduce intestinal inflammation and begin the healing process, try products such as UltraInflamx – by Metagenics, Robert’s formula – by Phytophamric, or aloe vera juice.

5) Flax seed or fish oils (Omega 3 Oils) have been known to greatly reduce the inflammatory process. If you find you have a hard time digesting them, try freezing the gel caps before taking them.

6) Extra vitamins and minerals are important at this time, especially if you are not absorbing nutrients correctly. Incorporate a liquid meal replacement (one that is loaded with vitamins, minerals and protein, and low on sugar!) into your diet as well as taking a high quality vitamin and minerals supplement. Try to find one that is in a gel casing or capsule.

7) Find a good mineral supplement such as Alfalfa, barley greens, liquid chlorophyll or colloidal minerals. Many of these come in a powdered form that you can mix with water or juice.

8) Because of blood loss due to rectal bleeding, and the anemia associated with it, incorporation of additional iron is important. Look to find an herbal iron alternative, especially one that comes in liquid form for better/easier assimilation. If you decide to look to a single herb, Yellow Dock would be my choice. (Consult with your health care provider before introducing additional iron into your diet.)

9) Starting a program of re-inoculating the intestinal tract with Friendly Bacteria, namely lactoacidopholis can enhance recovery and restore bowel function to normal.

Tea Tree Oil has been known to the Bundjalung Tribe of New South
Wales Australia for hundreds of years for its medicinal
properties.

This wonder oil was only tested scientifically in the early
1920’s by Arthur Penfold and found to be around 12 times more
powerful than carbolic acid and yet caused no harm to the skin.
It was used extensively by the Australian Defence Force during
World War Two but due to the discovery of synthetic drugs did not
become popular again until the 1960’s.

Over the years it has proved itself as a natural antiviral,
antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory oil. One great
development was that it was found to deep penetrate the skin
cleaning it and encouraging the formation of scar tissue.

Some of medical uses include healing blisters, reducing swelling
from insect bites and stings, cleaning and healing abrasions and
cuts, cures athletes foot and is very helpful in the healing of
acne. It will cure a sore throat, cold sores, coughs and dental
abscesses. It will solve most day to day first aid and medical
problems.

It also lends to daily beauty care as putting drops in shampoo,
body lotion, hand cream and in the bath will keep hair and skin
clean and healthy. A couple of drops on toothpaste will prevent
gum infections and bad breathe. It helps take the sting out of
sunburn and softens corns and calluses.

Tea Tree Oil’s anti-bacterial properties also extend use in the
household chores, making the house clean and healthy. Putting
drops in the humidifier will clean, disinfect and refresh the air
and putting drops in the dishwasher and washing machine will kill
all the germs.

True Tea Tree Oil is only grown in Australia. There are many
brands that are from inferior trees and not from the genuine Tea
Tree whose Botanical name is Malaeuca. The name Tea Tree was
given by Joseph Banks the botanist who travelled with Captain
Cook and collected the leaves to make a herbal teas.

Your first purchase should be made from a Health Shop until you
know how to define whether it is the genuine oil or an inferior
oil as the results will obviously not be the same with an
inferior product.

There are many excellent websites on the internet and many
excellent books which will give you all uses of this wonderful
oil. You will be amazed at the excellent results you obtain and

Yoga Cure for Hypertension

August 31, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Hypertension, the extensive problem found in all age groups has created a panic throughout the world, as its proper and harmless cure is still not confirmed even by the physicians of the modern world. Hypertension in its definition means a condition where the blood pressure is higher than the normal.

There are several causes of hypertension but the major ones are:

• Hormonal imbalance (increased secretion of epinephrine)
• Food habits (Excessive intake of oily foods)
• Age factors (narrowing of the arteries due to deposition of fat in them making the arterial wall narrower thereby which in turn increases the flow of blood)

Hypertension has drastic consequences like:
• Strokes
• Heart Attacks
• Heart Failure
• Arterial aneurysm
• Renal/Kidney Failure

It is true that hypertension could be controlled through intake of several allopathic drugs like – ACE inhibitors, terazosin, propranolol, amlodipine, bendroflumethiazide etc. though there are several hundreds besides them. But it is mostly found that there are always some side effects associated with them.

The burning question! Is it fully curable? The answer for this is same for all deadly illness – Every disease is curable but…? The statement continues. Anyway in this article I would like to focus how to control the problem of hypertension through Yoga practices.

Hypertension is mainly caused by improper working of arteries and heart which is ultimately controlled by our brain impulse. So if we are able to calm our brain it’s possible to calm our body parts too. Yoga provides a unique technique to handle this. Practices of several Yoga asanas (Postures) and Dhyana (Meditation) has proved beneficial to several high blood pressure patients.

Postures includes bending of legs and sitting in a fixed position, slow movement of neck in circular directions, lying on the floor over the front and bring legs closer to back etc., this relaxes the muscles which ultimately strengthens the blood vessels.

The other technique includes Meditation which is considered to be the best weapon against hypertension, this is one of the most ancient technique used for managing stress and other mental disorders. But some recent studies have shown that meditation even help in control hypertension because hypertension is caused by more or less a mental disorder. Meditation or Dhyana involves severe concentration of mind over one point, in order to do medication bring yourself in a relax able posture you like, after that concentrate your mind (Not eye, as we found in many books / articles which focus our eye over one object, it is entirely different phenomenon used to sharpen memory and has nothing to do with mental ailments) over any object with eyes shut. Practice this method in several body postures regularly and ultimately you will find your mind in calm position thereby helping in coping with your Hypertension.

Now-a-days several modern health organizations are promoting yoga for treating the hypertension and launching campaigns and workshops for the people to follow several Yoga guidelines in its treatment against Hypertension.

Formal Hair Styles

August 30, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Selecting formal hairstyles needs to begin with deciding on whether you want your hair up or down. Updo hairstyles are appropriate for most formal occasions. They create an heir of sophistication and drama. If you want a softer look then you will want to look for a formal hairstyle that is designed around having your hair down.

The prom is one of the first formal affairs that a young person will go to. To find the right prom hairstyles you will want to take several factors into consideration. First what shape is your face? If your face is narrow then you will want to add volume to the sides of your head by focusing the bulk of your hairstyle near your cheekbones. On the other hand, if you have a round or heart-shaped face then you will want to avoid adding addition fullness to the center of your face. Instead you will want to add height to your hair. This will create the illusion of a long and slender face. The second thing that you will want to consider when selecting a hairstyle for the prom is if you want to select from dramatic hairstyles, elegant hairstyles, vintage hairstyles or a youthful hairstyles. The final thing that you will want to take into consideration when selecting a prom hairstyle is what accessories you want to add to your hairstyle. You can use barrettes, flowers, ribbons, etc.

Formal dances for homecoming are other events that require a formal hairstyle. To select the right hairstyle for these events you will want to take the same things into consideration that you did when selecting a prom hairstyle. However, you will also need to take into consideration homecoming themes and current fashion trends when selecting homecoming hairstyles.

Weddings are another formal event that most people will attend in their lifetime. Bridal hairstyles will vary greatly from bride to bride and from season to season. For example spring and summer brides are more likely to select a hairstyle that is down, while fall and winter brides usually select wedding hair updo styles. As a bride you should select a hairstyle that will fit the theme of your wedding and that will make you the prettiest bride that you can be.

Prejudices And Misconceptions Of Overweight People

August 30, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

It is hard to win the struggle against excess weight if you do not possess the sufficient information on your “opponent”. But it is almost impossible to find a beautiful figure, being guided on well-wishers’ advices: whether it be the old girlfriend or the neighbor-fellow traveler in a train. Narrow-minded representations about the reasons of obesity carry the set of mutually exclusive recommendations. As a result it is too easy to get confused and disappointed.

Here are the most widespread myths and misconceptions.

I have got a power, I have got a will, but I haven’t got a will-power

Perhaps, the main charge, shown to “fat men”, is that they do not have will power to stop eating! Sounds like all slim people have “iron character”, and all fat men are weak-willed and spineless; and they cannot control their eating with their own efforts, therefore it is necessary to search for the means directed on appetite suppression. At the same time it is scientifically proved that as a rule, fat people don’t always eat more than slim ones.

Well, I have got such metabolism

“I cannot lose weight because I’ve got slack metabolism” – an idea which very seems pleasant to many fat people who are inclined to a complacent fatalism. Often such thoughts are compensation for the unwillingness to make at least minor efforts for weight loss. In reality, slowed-down metabolism is a disease of people with underactive thyroid gland. Only an endocrinologist can make such diagnosis, usually by means of special analyses can only. The self-diagnostics can turn wrong.

We cannot choose our parents

The overweight people are often are believe that obesity was inherited to them by their corpulent parents, and is really an inevitable “evil”. Therefore, the treatment of excess weight is pointless, as they believe. You cannot cheat the nature “, – they argue, eating the next roll. Actually, genetic predisposition to thickness is proved by nobody. But researchers noticed that if adoptive child is taken into a family of overweight men, who doesn’t suffer from excess weight, in a while he too will get fat. Here is a conclusion: struggling against your excess weight, change your life style, your nutrition system – and you will change yourself!

Single-o

The majority of people suffering from excess weight prefer to be engaged in self-treatment. Recommendations of the doctors are considered equal with girlfriend’s advices. It is necessary to understand that the problem of excess weight is not too harmless. You don’t not ask the neighbor how to cure the broken leg, do you? Giving away your health in others’ hands – it is simply precipitate!

If I quit smoking – I’ll get fat

“I’d be glad to quit, but I am afraid to get fat” – an excuse widespread enough. Really, nicotine is anorexic – the substance reducing appetite. Smokers know that a cigarette smoked before meal muffles their appetite. When a person quits smoking, the organism asks for some “compensation” for refusal of cigarettes: it would be desirable to suck at some sweets. Thus, refusal of smoking entails the increase of appetite. But refusal of cigarettes itself does not lead to weight gain or any metabolic shifts in organism. If one habit changes another and the person starts to gain weight, half an hour of jogging in the morning or in the evening with compensate any unpleasant consequences over and above.

Motivation

Motivation

Is Motivation keeping you from reaching your goals? If we were sitting down together, I know what we would be discussing. Our conversation may go something like this: You’d say, “Kelly, I don’t know what’s wrong with me? I know I need to lose 15lbs, I know I need to eat better. Why can’t I stay out of the chips and chocolate or pick up the weights?

I would say “My friend, you are not alone, I know many people in your exact same situation. Together we will come up with a plan to overcome the obstacles that are holding you back. We’ll come up with a plan that will get you your 15lb weight loss”, or something like that anyway.

How many times do you have that inner battle with yourself? The following tips will help you stay motivated to get started and stick with your exercise program so you can reach your goals and live a strong and healthy life.

Tip #1: Goal-Setting

We’ve all heard that we should set goals. To be effective they need to be specific and have a time frame. When you first sit down and think about what you want–set a few goals. Write down where you want to be in 6 months, 3 months, and weekly.

If your goal is to lose 15lbs, you will write that in the 6 month spot. In the 3 month spot, write down lose 10lbs, then in you weekly spot you will write down 1lb. It will look like this:

6 months – I will lose 15 lbs by June 30, 2007
3 months – I will lose 10 lbs by Mar. 31, 2007
Weekly – I will lose 1 lb a week.

Tip #2: Take Action

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’re always going to get what you’ve always got”

I love this quote. If you are overweight, or underweight or just don’t like something then you have to take action to change. In this step write down the action steps, the “how to’s” to get you to your goals.

For example: How will you lose 15 lbs in 6 months? – I will exercise 3-4 times a week for 1/2 hour-45 minutes. I will create better eating habits by cutting my sugar consumption.

In 3 months, I will lose 10 pounds by doing 20-30 minutes of cardio 3 days a week and strength training 2-3 times a week for 1/2 hour.

I will lose 1 lb of fat per week by eating lean meats and veggies. I will follow the 80:20 rule. 80% of the time eat well, 20% of the time I can have some of my favourite treats. (Note: Be cautious, this is not a lot of space to eat freely and indulge in whatever you want. Be cautious when choosing these types of foods)

You can and I suggest you get very specific. Write down exactly what exercises you will do, the days and time you will perform them. Keep your appointment with yourself, even better do them with a friend. Sometimes you will have to give yourself a big push, but do it and you will feel great afterwards.

Tip #3: Choose Activity You Enjoy

If you like to ride your bike, or rollerblade, then do these for your activity or cardio days. Get the kids, call a friend and get out there and enjoy yourself. You’ll have a great time as well as you will be burning calories and giving your heart a great workout as well. Things sometimes come up, don’t worry. Get back on track the next day.

Tip #4: Decide

Decide what you really want. Do you want to look better? Feel better? Have more energy and confidence?

Decide what you want and simply do everything it takes to get you there. You have to want a better, stronger, leaner, healthier body, more than you want the chips, chocolate or ice cream.

How badly do you want it? Decide what you want and go for it. You will have challenges and temptations, but your desire to have a lean, sexy, healthy body will get you through it. And for goodness sake, don’t do it alone! Tell your spouse, family and friends of your goals so they can all help you get there! You will have more success when you enlist the help of others.

Now armed with these empowering steps, go and set your own goals and start your way to better health.

Hey Doc, What Can I Take For Back Pain? Try These Evidence Based Nutritional Remedies For Starters

August 30, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Second Opinion

Back pain is the most common and recurrent type of pain in America. Back pain is the leading cause of doctor visits and account for millions of missed days of work, uncountable lost productivity and massive cost to treat.

You want some remedies, well I’d start with the things that show evidence. There is plenty of evidence out there now to keep you from wasting your time and money. I know there is a ton of remedies out there for back pain, because people prey on people in pain. Let’s face it, if your body hurts long enough and bad enough, you’ll try anything. Start with what has been shown to work.

Start with Omega 3 fish oils, particularly 1000-1500mg of EPA. This helps most conditions, is anti inflammatory and helps pain, helps the mood and the brain. EPA was shown to be as effective as or more than over the counter non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs in people with non surgical spine pain. Its safe, your body needs omega 3 oils and you give it none. You need this daily.

Next, I recommend Devils Claw (harpagophytum procumbens) for a month or so while under care. Two high quality trials examining the effects of Devil’s Claw found strong evidence that daily doses standardized to 50 mg or 100 mg harpagoside were better than placebo for short-term improvements in pain and rescue medication. Another high quality trial demonstrated relative equivalence to 12.5 mg per day of Vioxx. This prescription drug is no longer available due to lethal cardiovascular events. Devils Claw is very bitter and stimulates digestive juices. Do not take it if you suffer with an ulcer or use ulcer medication. I recommend people take it with their meals.

Two trials examining the effects White Willow Bark (salix alba) found moderate evidence that daily doses standardized to 120 mg or 240 mg salicin were better than placebo for short-term improvements in pain and rescue medication. An additional study showed that this worked as well as 12.5mg of Vioxx. White Willow is where the chemical formula for aspirin comes from. Like aspirin it can thin the blood and irritate the stomach. Studies show these effects are minimal with the herb compared to aspirin.

Finally, Cayenne (capsicum frutescens), applied topically, found moderate evidence that Capsicum produced more favorable results than placebo. I recommend a dose of 0.025% capsaicin. Remember this is hot pepper, it’s hot. Apply a small amount over the area for several days on a row, this way it won’t burn. This product has a cumulative effect of depleting the neurotransmitter that conducts the pain signal, it doesn’t cure anything.

Keep in mind this publication is meant solely to be informative and entertaining and not an alternative to proper medical diagnosis or treatment. Seek proper medical care if you have any symptoms.

And look for a Second Opinion next week.

Head Lice Treatments

August 29, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Head lice are tiny annoying insects that live off of their human host’s head and neck. Living amongst the human hair head lice have about a thirty day life span. A short life span to be sure, but they make the most of it as the female louse can lay upwards of 200 eggs.

Because of the amount of eggs a female can lay in such a short period of time, it’s easy to see that the head louse can infest a persons head in a very short period order.

How are infestations treated?

Hand Removal of lice and their nits (eggs)

Evidence is available that using a special comb that has very fine teeth is one of the more effective methods of delousing.

In order to get the most out of this method it is the best to wet the hair, apply conditioner or olive oil and methodically comb through the hair with a fine-toothed comb, called a louse comb. This method removes any lice or eggs that are in the swath path of the comb. To be effective, this process needs to be repeated for three or four days, or until there are no lice being removed by the comb.

Malathion

Malathion is a type of insecticide that works well against head lice. The method for using Malathion is to apply the Malathion to dry hair and leave for eight hours, after the eight hours you can wash the Malathion out. If there are still lice in the hair after 7 days then you can repeat the treatment.

As with any type of chemical treatment you will want to purchase and use pre-measured doses specifically for the removal of head lice and follow the instructions explicitly.

Lindane

Lindane is yet another type of insecticide and is stronger than other insecticides and has neurotoxin chemicals so it must be used carefully. Lindane is used by applying to wet hair for only four minutes before washing out.

Although the FDA believes the benefits of Lindane outweigh the risks when used as directed, given the potential for neurotoxicity, patients should only be treated with these medications if other treatments are not tolerable or other approved therapies have failed.

Pyrethrins

Pyrethins are used in head lice shampoos and normally make up only a third of a percent of the shampoo. This treatment involves using the shampoo as normal but leaving it in the hair for ten minutes before washing it out. You may need to use the shampoo more than once, if you do then there needs to be at least 7 days between each application.

Permethrin

Permethrin is said to work better than Lindane and is less damaging to humans. Permethrin comes in a crème and only makes up one percent of the crème. The crème needs to be applied to the hair and left for ten minutes before removal, if the crème is removed to early then the lice may become resistant to the treatment rendering it useless.

Summary

These are just a few of the different treatments available with combating head lice. With natural and manual methods, you’ll have to be a bit more persistent and patient but head lice can be removed.

With insecticides, caution and prudence is of utmost importance. Use the dosages exactly as directed and take all of the necessary precaution illuminated on the directions label.
