How To Monitor Weight Loss?
Too much TV–>Too much junk-food–>Lack physical activity= OBESITY
Childhood obesity is a disease that goes treated with the professional support like: doctors-dietists-psycologists could provide help kids to start this slow and difficult way.
The prevention is basic if assisted through a “Program” based on self-control.
The rules of prevention are:
to reduce the sedentariness: to avoid that our children spend most of their time watching TV and playing videogames influenced by marketing, misleading advertising about sofdrinks, hyper caloric snacks and other foods.
Daily physical activity: a long walking is surely healthier and is the equivalent to waste energy almost 3 times higher than that obtained spending the same time watching TV. Especially are suggested: swimming and biking.
The benefits of physical activity are many, from reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases to improvement of mental health.
Balanced nutrition: the dietetic therapy beyond having the purpose to reduce the weight of child also should educate him and his family to a stable nutrition looking for:
- to reduce the caloric insertion.
- to introduce meals that makes feel gratifyied.
- to control the introduction of fat and proteins of animal origins.
- to increase the contribution of carbohydrates to high absorption like fruit
and vegetables.
- to decrease the quantity of simple sugar.
- to increase the income of fibers with integral food and the daily
insertion of vitamins and minerals.
The overweight’s reduction must be gradual and at long term. Planning new nutritional habits either in the child’s life or in all family, preventing mistakes in the nutrition from the part of the family members.
The child must feel himself like a protagonist of choosing the food respecting the right nutrition and not consider the hyper caloric diet as an order.
To not become overweight and to live in healthy way it’s very important to give a “rhythm” to the daily nutrition.
To the 3 main meals, namely, breakfast, lunch and dinner is necessary to add 2-3 light snacks: yogurth, some fruit or milk avoiding snacks and cracker hypercalorics.
All this to avoid getting the child at the table too starved.
A health feeding education is checking the food’s quality but also the quantity of the consumed food.
Good quality = right quantity
Eating smarter and being more active!!!

Surgery Robots Mean More Education And Training For Both Nurses And Doctors
More and more hospitals in the developed world are employing robots in surgery, including Japan, for example. Iseikai Hospital in Osaka and Nagoya Kyouritsu Hospital in Nagoya are just two Japanese hospitals that use these labor-saving surgical automation systems.
However, despite their success in the surgery room, these robots also had unintended consequences like creating issues in the way the insurance companies are billed for “services rendered.” Billing for operations performed by robots are already a topic of controversy in Japan since they are not categorized as “regular surgical operations.”
In British Columbia, Canada, a “Da Vinci” brand robotic system will start operating this Fall (2007) to help doctors during surgeries that require accessing tight areas like the pelvis or the chest. Vancouver General Hospital is planning to use Da Vinci in urological (e.g., Radical Prostatectomy), cardiac (e.g., Mitral Valve Repair) and gynecological (e.g., Hysterectomy) surgeries.
Canadian news reports claim that “robot-assisted surgery offers patients fewer surgical complications, less post-operative pain, faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays and improved health outcomes.” Purchasing Da Vinci, installing it, training the personnel and maintaining it for three years will cost the hospital somewhere around $6.5 million.
Here in the United States, did you know that robots are performing cancer surgeries in Charlotte, North Carolina? CyberKnife, a $3.7 million knifeless robot, is operating on cancer patients with precision radiation at the NorthEast Medical Center. CyberKnife is also used in Mission Health and Hospitals in Asheville and UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Other “radiosurgery” machines used in surgery include the Gamma Knife in Winston-Salem and Greenville and the XKnife and a Varian device in Durham.
This irreversible trend of course requires both surgeons and nurses require new technical skills to allow them work with such computerized and programmable wonders. Our healthy future will demand even a higher level of training and technical competence from our nurses and healthcare providers.

Controlling Your Waistline With Portion Controlled Diets
A little over thirty years ago portion controlled diets became very popular. They were a quick and easy way to control how many calories you took in every day and weight loss was inevitable. Every one seemed to love them and the results that they gave. But over time their appeal started to fade as dieters got bored with the food selection and the taste and textures of the products were, well let’s just say that the boxes that they came in often tasted better than the meals they held.
Then 10 years ago there was a resurgence in popularity due to many health advisors stating all the ills that could be had when one is overweight and others praising the results that could be obtained with a diet that was weighed and measured, as most of us underestimate the size of our food portions. But again consumers started turning away from these plans in droves as they felt the types of foods offered were less than their gourmet counter parts. Sure, no one expected the meals to taste like a fancy restaurant meal but they also didn’t want to feel as though they were being punished with such a limited variety of foods or foods that tasted bland.
If you have never thought of going on a portioned controlled diet because you prefer to eat for the taste of food and not just to survive, then I’ve got some good news for you. A funny thing happened last year, several celebrities started showing up on television speaking the praises of portion controlled diets. They spoke about the variety of meals that are offered and practically had up drooling when they described the taste and how the weight just melted off. But they couldn’t be talking out the same type of portion controlled diet foods that I can get, they must have them made especially for them?
Surprise! These are the same meals that you and I can get. Yes, you see the industry has finally listened and they have, and are continuing to revamp their programs so that it is no longer a chore to eat the meals, but a luxury. Gone are the tiny portions, gone are the one size fit’s all type of program. You now can choose the foods that you want from a very large selection and not have to settle for the same meal weekly. The portion sizes for men are larger, they have specific programs for diabetics, vegetarians, those that want to go the low carb route and for those over 60 who have need different nutritional needs than those in their 30’s.
Just reading the long list of food choices can make you dizzy. Oh, and did I mention snacks and cakes? Yes, you’ll find chips, chocolate cake and cookies as part of your selection. Although still not quite as tasty as home cooked meals or a good as a local four star restaurant, the food actually is quite good. What is also good is the fact that they are still low calorie, low fat meals that will help you reach you weight loss goal fairly quickly. There are even plans that accelerate weight loss for when your in a bind to lose weight for a special event.
Although these diets are still referred to as portion controlled diets, don’t let the old reputations hold you back, portion controlled diets are back and better than ever in 2007. Next time your watching television and you see a celebrity talking about the portion diet that they are on, listen up,as it may just be what you are looking for to fit into those skinny jeans.

Practice Jnana Yoga for Optimum Mental Health
Anyone who cares about their health often focuses on keeping his or her body in peak condition. Who considers the health of the mind? A psychiatrist or a psychologist is concerned with behavior, and mental health, but how can Yoga help you?
We have all heard Yoga is a good “mind and body exercise,” but how does a Yoga student exercise his or her mind through Yoga practice. How can Yoga help you develop mental strength? Let’s look at one of the many styles of Yoga, to find answers, and acquire optimum mental health.
Jnana Yoga is the union of mind, body, and spirit, through acquired knowledge. It is true that reading will make your mind sharp, but what do Jnana Yogis read? Traditionally, Jnana Yogis read Hindu scriptures to expand their knowledge.
Yoga has been around for thousands of years. The Brahmin caste would have had more access to Yogic philosophy, and the scriptures (Vedas), than the average person, at that time.
This same parallel can be made to any holy man of any religion. Access to written knowledge, books, and Holy Scriptures was not common place, in any religion, hundreds of years ago. There was a time when the average person was forbidden to have a copy of the Bible. The early Bibles were very big, expensive to produce, and not meant for the public to interpret. Whether we like it, or not, this is a part of history.
Now, let’s fast forward to the 21st century. Millions of new computer users are accessing the Internet every year. So, how is it that more people, than ever, are disconnected from their mind, body, and spirit? We have attention disorders, multi-tasking, and many distractions to keep us far from tranquility.
Even in a Yoga class, you may hear a cell phone go off – despite the fact there are rules and a sign on the entrance of most Yoga studios. The sign might read, “Turn your cell phone off,” but people do not see it, even if it is right under their nose. Why?
Unfortunately, people do not read or pursue vital information. Cable television has hundreds of channels and the Internet has millions of sites. Do you really think the masses are trying to expand their minds by reading?
Jnana Yoga practice, and regular meditation, raises the “Level of Consciousness.” Yet it seems that prosperity seems to breed poor mental and physical health. When given the choice, children would rather play video games than watch the History Channel. Therefore, many adults must be getting in touch with their “inner child.”
Now, let’s come full circle. Entertainment is a wonderful thing, but we should be deliberate in our efforts to challenge our minds. Creativity cannot be found in games that are programmed or in viewing stories where you can easily guess the ending.
Your mind must be challenged on a daily basis by reading good quality writing and watching entertainment that is true art. The modern Jnana Yoga practitioner has much more access to education, information, art, and entertainment. However, he or she must be much more selective than ever before.
