The Hidden Price of Being Healthy
What I am also going to point out is the not-so-obvious cost of not being healthy. But, as you know, nothing in life is free. If there is a benefit, there is a cost. What most people do not see is the cost, the price you have to pay for the benefits you are getting.
There are also tons and tons of hidden costs that most people never see. I will list some of the biggest ones. This is the price you have to pay for not being healthy:
1. Vitality
2. An abundance of energy to do everything you want to do
3. Happiness
4. Love and closeness with others
5. Satisfaction and fulfillment in life
6. Healing symptoms and disease
7. Symptoms and disease going away
8. Relief from the suffering that goes with the symptoms and disease
9. Inner peace and harmony
10.Being symptom- and disease-free
11.Mental focus, memory, and clarity (no brain fog)
12.Being awake and fully alive every day (not just dragging through stuff and surviving)
13.Being present and having the ability to be with people
14.No worry or fear
15.Being confident in yourself
16.Being complete and happy
17.The ability to deal with issues that arise simply and with ease
18.Having better health now, with security for yourself and your family later
19.More time to do what you want to do
20.Simpler choices
21.Looking great, feeling good, reducing fat, and having tons of energy
22. Being satisfied and Not being hungry all the time
The list goes on and on, but these are some of the big ones.
These are all things you do NOT get if you avoid being healthy. It is the price you have to pay to not be healthy.
If you are being healthy, these same things are your rewards. These are the things you get when you are well. These things show up in your life as you are being healthy and well. So much so, that I want you to think of your own reasons why, things vital to your happiness, freedom and life that you know you would get you out of bed in the morning wanting to be healthy.
There are the hidden benefits that many people get for not being healthy. Benefits that, if you are honest with yourself, you like getting as well.
You probably are very familiar with the benefits you get from NOT being healthy. You get to eat food that tastes good, you get to be lazy and sit on the couch and veg out and watch TV. You get to not do all the hard work of exercise. There are many other benefits that people get from not being healthy, and many others that I probably did not list. I am not going to list them all, because you know most of them. I will list the benefits you do get that most people do not want to admit, often, even to themselves.
There are four main benefits that you probably get from not being healthy, that you don’t want to admit:
1. Avoiding being responsible
2. Getting to be right and making others wrong
3. Dominating others and avoiding domination
4. Justifying yourself and invalidating others.
These things are the hidden benefits. I will talk about each of them in more detail, and explain what I mean. You have to dig down and be honest, though. These four things are usually true for everyone, and the point of my sharing them is to make you aware of them, and for you to be honest with yourself about them. Most people do not think of these things as benefits. But if you look at them and are really honest with yourself, you will see the benefit people get from them.
People get to avoid being responsible by putting the responsibility on the medical symptoms and disease care system. You live under the illusion that they will create a magic pill or invent some technique or system to make you think and healthy without you having to do a thing. They are responsible for your health, not you. It is an illusion many of us believe. Because then we get to avoid being responsible for our own health and eat anything we want. We get to do what we want, and then blame all of our symptoms on someone else.
You get to be right and do exactly what you want. You don’t have to listen to all those doctors, all those people, especially that annoying “health freak” in your family. Every family usually has one. You get to be right about being able to do what you want. You get to make them wrong. And don’t we all enjoy making someone we don’t like so very wrong? We all want to be right and I can prove it. Have you every seen someone try and prove themselves wrong? Argue that they are not right? People love to be right and that includes being right with being able to eat whatever they want for whatever reasons they want.
You get to dominate others, and avoid others’ dominating you. You do not have to do what they say. You can do what you want. You can probably even control people and make them angry by doing things your way, by doing what you want.
You get to justify yourself and invalidate others. You get proof for yourself that what you are doing is right. You get evidence that the way you are doing it is right. You get to make sure that other people’s way of thinking is wrong, and make sure they know you know they are wrong.
Realizing the real, often hidden truth about the costs and benefits of being healthy will often help you create a stronger desire to be healthy.

ADHD and Treatments – 5 Different Options to Help Your Child
Learning about ADHD and treatments can make it easier for parents when deciding which treatment option or options to adopt. There are a number of different ADHD treatments available, however not all will suit everyone, it may be a case of trial and error to find the treatment or combination of treatments that have the most beneficial effect.
The following are list of treatments available for ADHD symptoms
1. Stimulants
Stimulant medications are often the first option when treating ADHD. They are believed to work effectively by improving behavior, increasing attention span and focus. There is an extensive list of stimulants available both for children and adults.
Some need to be taken throughout the day as the effects wear off; however, more modern versions have a slow release action, which means one a day doses.
There are potential side effects with these drugs including, headaches, stomachaches, reduced appetite, ticks, jitters and social withdrawal. Reducing or changing medication or taking additional medication can reduce the side effects.
2. Non-stimulants
Though another popular treatment method, non-stimulants are generally not considered to be as effective as the stimulants. However, non-stimulants work in the same way by primarily increasing certain brain chemicals that reduce impulsiveness, hyperactivity and increase attention span. They are however, not without side effects, which can be severe and include mood swings, nausea, fatigue, and reduce appetite and cause an upset stomach.
3. Supplements – Children diagnosed with ADHD are often found with deficiencies in vitamins and minerals in their body. Hence, supplements are thought to be of enormous help to improve their behavioral symptoms.
Some of the most effective supplements for ADHD are essential fatty acids, amino acids, zinc, and magnesium. Other supplements often taken include calcium, iron, vitamin C, and colloidal minerals.
4. Diet – this is considered as one of the largest factors to affect ADHD behaviors. Since a child or adult with ADHD displays behavioral problems, eating a nutritious diet can make a difference to the behaviors. Overly processed foods, starchy foods, and sugary foods should be reduced.
5. Herbs – for centuries, herbs have been the only treatment available. Scientists today find many herbs to be of great help in treating many conditions and ADHD is no exception. Evening primrose oil, chamomile, gotu kola, and lemon balm are among of the most commonly used herbs to relieve the symptoms of ADHD.

Abdominal Muscle Exercises
As a personal trainer, I get asked this question at least once a day, “Which the best exercises to get firm, flat and toned abdominals?” It’s not an easy question to address, since there are hundreds of abdominal exercises.
Let’s face it. Our eyes gravitate towards a flat and well toned abdominal region. We all want that elusive flat, firm and enviable look of ‘washboard abs’. The muscles of your abdominal region, and indeed the midsection aren’t isolated; they weave through your torso like a web of high-tensile steel, and it’s critical to train them the right way.
So how do you get results fast? A recent study by the American Council on Exercise has the answer. Let’s discover the 3 most effective exercises to get flat abdominals, the correct way to breathe during abdominal exercises and tips and tricks to get results faster. I have integrated these exercises to help thousands of clients get results. You can view my clients in action with exercise videos and download full color abdominal exercise routines, diet plans and ebooks by registering on my websites mentioned at the end of this article.
A California study conducted by the American Council on Exercise has determined that the classic sit-up is not the best answer for stronger, flatter abdominals. The conclusions were intriguing, to say the least. The traditional sit-up was among the least effective abdominal muscle exercises.
Sit-ups (in which you raise your trunk up from the floor with your knees straight or bent) involve the hip muscles disproportionately relative to the abdominals. This means the hip muscles work more and the abdominal muscles work less i.e they are not getting trained in the right manner. In addition, there is an unnecessary (and potentially harmful) strain on the lower back. The sit-up is not only ineffective, but potentially harmful.
There’s more, and it’s equally surprising. The study indicated that several gadgets for the abdominals were either ineffective or marginally more effective than a regular abdominal crunch, which doesn’t cost you anything, other than the time required to learn the right technique.
Now for the big news. The top three abdominal muscle exercises were:
The Bicycle maneuver. The Captains Chair. Crunch on an exercise ball.
For best results.
Start with 2-3 sets of each exercise, 8-10 repetitions. Increase by 8-10 repetitions each week till you work your way up to a set of 40 repetitions in each set. 2 sets of 35-40 repetitions a day for the abdominals is ideal, and you do not need to train more than that.
Breathing during abdominal muscle exercises.
With all abdominal muscle exercises, exhale as you contract / exert / come up / crunch your abdominals; inhale as you relax / lower / return to the starting position.
Points to remember.
1. If you have lower back injuries or pain, consult a doctor before you begin, so you don’t hurt yourself. Also see a physician if you are over 35, have been sedentary for a long time, have high blood pressure and/or cholesterol, are a smoker, have chest pains or shortness of breath or have had a joint or muscle injury.
2. It’s not the number of repetitions, but the quality and technique that gets results. Overdoing sit-ups can hurt your lower back. Besides, the best way to get those flat lower abdominal muscles is to be patient for 8-10 weeks, eat a healthy diet and do regular aerobic exercise.

Food Allergy Symptoms
Food allergy symptoms can be quite uncommon. You might not believe this but only 1 out of 70 adults suffer from true food allergies. Food poisoning or even food intolerance is sometimes mistaken for a food allergy because of the similarities in symptoms. If you are unsure if you are allergic to a particular food, you should learn to decipher what classic food allergy is.
Mostly affecting children, food allergy is an illness where the body’s immune system defends itself from a substance that it considers to be harmful. The allergic reaction experienced is the sign that the body is trying to overcome the allergy-causing substance. Doctors usually run test to determine and confirm your food allergies. They might even ask you questions regarding your family’s general health since food allergy is thought to be partly hereditary. If your doctor finds a history of eczema, hay fever or asthma, then you have a higher risk of having a food allergy.
A true allergic reaction usually starts with swelling and itching in the throat, tongue and mouth. Other food allergy symptoms include skin reactions, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, wheezing, runny nose and sore, red and itchy eyes. An allergic reaction could begin the moment you ingest the food you are allergic to. The symptoms, however, could take longer to develop, sometimes even several hours. An anaphylactic shock is the worst possible allergic reaction. It could cause severe swelling, unconsciousness, lowering of the blood pressure and breathing difficulties. If not given proper medical attention, it could possibly lead to death. As you can see, it’s important to deal with food allergy symptoms right away.
Foods that cause allergy include peanuts, shellfish, tree nuts and fish. Some children develop allergies to cow’s milk, soy, eggs, wheat and seafood. If you have an allergy to a particular food, you could also have a reaction to other allergy-causing food. This is called cross-reactivity. Your dietician and physician could help you identify which foods to avoid and prevent allergic reactions.
If you are still unsure if you have a food allergy, you should consult a doctor specializing on allergies. You would be asked questions pertaining to the symptoms you experience after eating a certain food, amount of the particular food you ate, preparation and storage of the food, medication you took to relieve the symptoms and effectively of the medication. All these can help diagnose your food allergy.
It is very important that you see a food allergy specialist. You must never, under any circumstances, try to determine the food you are allergic to on your own. You must remember that allergic reactions can be severe and you might be putting yourself in a very dangerous situation. If you’re allergic to something and you tamper with it, your body can react in bad ways.
Skin prick tests are sometimes used to diagnose a food allergy. A small amount of food extract is injected on the skin surface. An allergic reaction to that food extract will result to swelling and redness of the injection site. Sometimes, a false positive reaction is observed from a skin prick test. It would be wise to perform other tests, like a blood test for instance, to confirm food allergy and complete diagnosis.

What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing while sleeping. This condition can be caused by several different things and is usually diagnosed through a sleep clinic study. There are also several treatments for a person with sleep apnea. Living with sleep apnea can be scary, but once a person gets diagnosed they should be able to find a treatment that allows them to get on with their life and sleep normal once again.
In a person with sleep apnea the airway can be blocked by tissue, tonsils, the tongue or muscles collapsing. When a person is suffering from sleep apnea they will usually not know. Other people may notice it when they are sleeping and wake the person or tell them they were snoring or making funny noises when they were sleeping.
The symptoms of sleep apnea are usually extreme tiredness even after what seems to be a good nights sleep. This is because once a person stops breathing they are woken up out of the deep sleep. They never really do get to enjoy the deep sleep that is necessary for a good nights rest. They may also snore, have headaches upon waking up, have a dry mouth and have mood changes.
Sleep apnea can be very dangerous, so it is important that if a person suspects they may suffer from it that they seek medical help as soon as possible. Sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, stroke and impotence. A doctor will administer a sleep test either in a clinic or for the person to do at home. This test will measure the oxygen levels in the person’s blood, as well as their sleep patterns.
Once a person is diagnosed with sleep apnea the doctor will usually start to see why exactly the condition is present. The cause of the sleep apnea will usually dictate the treatment. Sometimes if a person loses weight or changes sleeping positions they can stop their sleep apnea. There are also medical devices like mouth guards, that can be used. For example, a C-PAP is a machine that is often used to treat sleep apnea. It blows air into the person’s nose and helps to keep the airway open. In some cases where the cause is a physical deformity, surgery may be a good option.
Sleep apnea is quite easy to treat once a person is diagnosed. The diagnosis can be the hardest part of dealing with sleep apnea, since a person is usually unaware they are even having problems. However, if a person experiences any of the symptoms of sleep apnea they should see their doctor and get tested. Letting the condition go without treatment could be fatal, so any suspicion should be checked out.

Liver Problems – What are the Symptoms?
Liver problems can range from mild liver congestion to a serious liver disease. Depending on the problem, many people are unaware they have a liver problem and may only have vague symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is chronic tiredness. These people generally feel lethargic and sluggish during the day, especially in the morning.
Due to the fact that the liver is one of the hardest working organs in the body and has many roles, there are a number of problems that can occur with the liver. The three main categories these problems fall into are:
1. Disease of the liver cells
2. Problems producing or secreting bile
3. Problems with detoxification
How do you know if you have a liver problem?
Tests are available through standard pathology labs that measure liver enzymes, total protein, albumin and bilirubin. Although these tests are called liver %u2018function%u2019 tests, they indicate whether the liver is damaged rather than how it is functioning. In other words, they are used to detect liver diseases, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis as well as liver cells being damaged from viruses, bacteria, alcohol, drugs and so on. These tests are not useful in detecting mild problems with liver congestion and sluggish detoxification. This is best done by observing your symptoms. However, it is important to consult your practitioner and have the tests performed anyway, just to rule out the possibility of liver disease.
An ultrasound can detect if there is a blockage in the bile duct. This is most commonly caused by the presence of gallstones in the biliary duct. It is estimated that around 10-20% of people over 40 years of age have gallstones and their presence is linked to a high fat, low fibre diet. The presence of gallstones in the bile duct typically causes nausea and pain. Bile flow can also be impaired through the liver, however this can be difficult to detect with standard testing.
General symptoms that can indicate a liver problem
Feel tired and unrefreshed when you wake up
Energy levels fluctuate throughout the day, with your tiredness becoming worse around mid-morning and/or mid-afternoon
Difficulty losing weight
Frequent headaches
Bad breath, digestive problems, bloating, gas, indigestion
Allergies and intolerances to foods that are worsening as time goes on
Reactions to many chemicals including cleaning products, petrol, paint, perfumes, bleaches, etc.
Problems digesting fatty/creamy/oily foods. They can make you feel unwell, nauseous or cause heart burn and reflux
A yellowish tinge to the skin, eyes and palms of the hands
Reactions to drugs, in particular headache tablets, antibiotics and anti-histamines
An intolerance to alcohol. Either you get drunk very quickly or you have bad hangovers that are out of proportion to the amount of alcohol you have drunk
Caffeine gives you a strong buzz and can keep you awake for hours
When you eat asparagus, you have a funny smell in your urine
Skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, general rashes, itchy skin
Hot flushes that feel as if they rise up from the torso towards the head
You frequently wake up around 1-3am in the morning

Anxiety and Panic Disorders Defined
The strict definition of anxiety is a combination of emotions such as fear and apprehension. It can lead to other problems, including physical conditions such as nausea, chills, trembling, chest pain and being short of breath. Most people experience some form of anxiety from time to time, but people who suffer from an anxiety disorder have a chronic problem that stays with them all the time.
There are a number of things that can lead to anxiety. A fear of some event or situation that is yet to come, a memory of something that happened in the past or an event that is happening now can all cause anxiety problems.
It can also be caused by unfamiliar situations, which often make people uneasy. Public speaking or other public attention is a very common example. Studies have shown that many people are more afraid of speaking in front of people than they are of dying.
Anxiety disorders – a chronic form of anxiety – can be genetic or they may be due to some sort of trauma in the past. These disorders come in several forms including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic attack disorder (PAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive compulsive disorder, or post traumatic stress disorder. They can also include specific fears or phobias.
Many people who suffer from anxiety don’t do anything about it – they feel they can just live with it and learn to deal with it. Sometimes this is not possible, however. If left untreated, these problems can become gradually worse, leading to more serious side-effects and possibly other illnesses.
There are several forms of treatment for anxiety problems. Medication is one of the common ones. Drugs such as Valium, Xanax and Klonopin are used to treat anxiety, but they can sometimes become addictive so they are not always the best choice.
Psychotherapy is another common form of treatment. Some people feel it can be “addictive” as well with a person becoming dependent on the attention to deal with their anxiety. It is a healthier alternative to medication in some cases, however.
There are also alternative treatment methods such as herbal supplements and mental relaxation techniques that have shown positive effects for many people.
