Tips for Staying Heart Healthy
Having a healthy heart will greatly improve your quality of life. According to a study in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association, 50 year olds with normal blood pressure lived longer and enjoyed a higher quality of life.
So, how is your heart?
Nearly 1 in 3 US adults has high blood pressure. High blood pressure is called a silent killer as the majority of people with the condition are unaware it exists. High blood pressure means that your heart is working extra hard. This places a burden on other key organs such as the kidneys.
Tips for staying heart healthy:
(1) Develop a relaxation practice, learn how to meditate and learn how to do deep abdominal breathing.
(2) Learn how to eat in a way that nourishes your health. If food is your replacement for sex and happiness it’s time for some inner work so that what is really eating you, can be healed.
(3) Purchase a blood pressure monitor and take regular blood pressure readings. Record your numbers in a notebook. Take your reading in the morning and in the evening and before bed. If your numbers are high, after your reading take 10 – 15 minutes and do deep abdominal breathing. One simple breathing exercise is to breathe in to the count of 4, hold the breath for a count of 2 and breathe out for a count of 6.
Researchers suggest, for someone just beginning take your readings over three days per week for two weeks. Once the situation has become stable and you understand your patterns, the home readings can be less frequent.
(4) Most important is learning to stay calm. If you tend to fly off the handle, get easily ticked off or always cursing you may benefit from working with someone to learn calming skills.
(5) It is never too late or too early to start. If you are under 50 or over 50 become friendly with your heart, so it can last in good condition. Once high blood pressure becomes established and if you are on drugs, the situation is more challenging. Prevent high blood pressure from developing. You’ll live longer and with more joie de vie.
(6) Consider classical homeopathy from a qualified homeopath. I recommend this approach as a way to heal underlying imbalances. OK, this is an unabashed plug however homeopathy is a holistic therapeutic approach.
Reading Your Numbers
High blood pressure is systolic (top number) pressure of 140 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or higher and/or a diastolic (bottom number) pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher. Prehypertension (previously called “high-normal” blood pressure) is 120-139 mm Hg systolic or 80-89 diastolic. Normal blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic.
