The Dangers of Asbestos
If you read the newspaper or watch the nightly news, chances are you’ve heard about some of the dangers of asbestos. What is often ignored in these messages, however, is that asbestos also has a number of useful properties. If used responsibly and maintained in good condition, asbestos can be beneficial without causing harm.
What is asbestos? The term refers to microscopic, naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals. These minerals have been used for years by the construction industry. The three most common types of asbestos are chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite. Asbestos is commonly used in insulation, fireproofing, roofing, flooring, and other building materials. The strength of the fibers and asbestos’s resistance to heat make these materials very useful.
Why, then, are people afraid of asbestos? Well, asbestos is a carcinogenic, toxic substance. Asbestos-containing materials are not a health risk if they are left undisturbed. However, if these materials become damaged, the asbestos fibers separate and become airborne. This is when human exposure is likely to occur, as asbestos may be inhaled into the lungs.
While no “safe level” of exposure has been determined, health problems are more common with greater and longer exposure to the fibers. Some of these health problems include asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. It is not true that asbestos causes headaches or sore muscles, as many once believed. Immediate health issues like these are rarely seen. In actuality, most damaging health effects of asbestos exposure don’t surface until many years later. Perhaps this is why building buyers prefer to err on the side of caution when asbestos inspections are done.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a program for schools and other building owners in order to keep asbestos fiber levels low. In an effort to protect students and residents, the program aims to teach people how to recognize asbestos-containing materials. It also educates people about how to manage these materials and how to avoid exposure. With proper education and careful management, health risks from asbestos can theoretically be prevented.

Positive Aspects of Menopause?
Although vaginal dryness and other unpleasant symptoms are often part and parcel to menopause, and is not something a woman looks forward to, did you ever stop to think that maybe menopause isn’t such a bad thing?
Menopause is part of every woman’s natural aging process. It is the time when the ovaries produce lower levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. Menopause is the end of menstruation and the end of a woman’s child bearing years. It is unavoidable and is something every woman will have to deal with. Thus, instead of dreading something you can’t change; why not look at menopause in a positive way.
Here are some ways you can positively deal with menopause:
So long reproduction – Since menopause shuts down your reproductive cycle, this means you are now menses free. Rejoice! You no longer have to worry about being surprised by an irregular pesky period, or live by the rules of a 28 day calendar. You can travel and swim any time of the year without having to think twice about “that time of the month”.
In addition, for many endometriosis sufferers, their symptoms tend to subside or disappear entirely. Although menopause does not cure the disease, it appears to be a fantastic form of treatment due to the fact that estrogen levels drop. Even though it is not known what causes endometriosis, it is evident that estrogen plays an important role in the manifestation of the disease.
Take control of your symptoms – Are you suffering from hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, anxiety, depression, fatigue, vaginal dryness, sore or stiff joints, weight gain, or any of the other symptoms caused by menopause? If you are, have you done anything about the way you feel? There are many treatments available to help you cope with the symptoms you are experiencing. Don’t be afraid to research menopausal symptoms, talk to friends for coping advice- and above all – make sure you talk to your doctor before starting any treatment.
Take care of yourself – Did you know that a healthy diet, and engaging in regular exercise and relaxation techniques, can actually improve menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, pain, insomnia and PMS? In addition, a healthy lifestyle will make you feel better about yourself because it reduces stress, and encourages positive thinking and creativity. Therefore, you need to take time out of each day to focus on your own wellbeing. Treat yourself to a warm bath, a cup of green tea and a good book.
Find support – There are millions of women all over the world who are experiencing the same change of life as you. Why go it alone when you likely know someone who is perimenopausal, menopausal or postmenopausal. Your mother, aunt, sister(s), in-laws, friends, co-worker, or neighbor(s) are all women you should be turning to when menopause is getting you down.
Change your attitude – You need to get on with your life, and shouldn’t use menopause as an excuse to slow you down. Your body is changing, why not change the way you think with it. You’ll never be who you once were, and you can’t predict the future. All you have left, and all that matters is your present. Transforming the way you perceive yourself and the world around you with a positive attitude, will positively impact the way your body deals with menopause.
Getting older isn’t something you should dread. It’s the time when you truly become wise, know what it means to be a woman, can be proud of your life and enjoy it to the fullest.

The Facts on Anabolic Steroids Cycling!
Bodybuilders generally follow different cycles than other athletes because of their goals. Bodybuilders use steroids for two purposes, to increase muscle mass and decrease bodyfat. Such other factors as endurance, stamina, and strength are secondary and while important for training purposes, play no role on a bodybuilding stage.
Cycling means alternating periods of anabolic steroids use with non-use. But bodybuilders competing at the national and professional levels seldom come off the drugs. For most of these people being “off” the juice just means taking lower amounts. There is rarely a point during the year when the person’s system is clear of the drugs. Generally speaking they stay on heavy amounts of steroids continuously.
Why Cycle?
The primary reason why bodybuilders cycle steroids is to reduce the risk of side effects. It’s well known that the risk of side effects greatly increases with the length of time the person is on the drugs. A short 6 to 8 week cycle will probably not produce any serious medical issues, but most bodybuilders don’t limit themselves to such short cycles. They stay on for months, if not years at a time. It’s not surprising that many of these individuals start suffering side effects.
A second reason for anabolic steroids cycling is to beat drug tests. Bodybuilders and other athletes got a free rise for the first 15 to 20 years of drug use, as a test for steroids wasn’t developed until the mid 1970’s. The first tests were easy to beat but it wasn’t long before the testers had closed the gap. By cycling the drugs between long acting and short acting, bodybuilders can often pass their drug test on contest day.
A third reason for cycling steroids is to increase their effectiveness. Most users report that they made their best gains on their first cycle. This is because their systems were not used to the drugs. But with each additional cycle their steroid receptors become less responsive to the drugs. This is why heavy users stay heavy users – small amounts just don’t produce significant results anymore. This “down regulation” of steroid receptors is one of the primary reasons why the first cycle of steroids is usually the most effective.
The problem with Cycling.
Even though most intelligent bodybuilders realize that cycling is the way to go, it’s not foolproof. Some individuals are very sensitive to the effects of these drugs. Even by alternating periods of usage with non-usage they may still develop medical problems. No one knows exactly how a drug will affect a person’s body until he starts using it. By then it may be too late.
Anabolic Steroids cycling is no longer a guaranteed method for passing a drug test. Tests are becoming more and more sophisticated and many steroids can be traced as far back as 18 months from their last usage. Even some of the short acting, fast clearing oral drugs are being picked up in drug tests. Even if an athlete cycled steroids to beat a drug test and reduce the risk of side effects, the bottom line is that as of 1991, steroid laws have made anabolic steroids illegal substances.
Legal alternatives!
With all the risks associated with steroids, bodybuilders should check out the various legal steroid analogs that are available. Users report that many of these products are just as powerful and as effective at increasing muscle size as their illegal and potentially dangerous cousins.

Anti-Ageing Tips For Youthful Skin
As we get older, skin ageing is inevitable. Over time our skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity, and we develop lines and wrinkles. Lines on the forehead, crows feet, lines around the lips and mouth, sagging skin on the jowls and neck are all signs of growing old. Exposure to the sun, diet. lifestyle and environmental factors also have an impact on the skin. What can you do to keep looking younger for as long as possible?
1. Protect your skin from the sun. Use sun protection products with an SPF factor 15 or higher on your face throughout the year, whether the sun is shining or not! When on holiday or spending a lot of time outdoors in the summer, choose a product with SPF 30 for longer lasting protection form the sun.
2. Drink Plenty of Water. Hydrating you skin from within will keep it plump and firmer looking. Drinking at least 8 glasses or 2.5 litres of water a day also flushes out harmful toxins which can cause premature ageing of the skin. Try replacing as many of your drinks as possible with water, and reduce your intake of coffee and alcohol, which dehydrate the body.
3. Eat a Well Balanced Diet. Eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. A glass of orange juice can be counted as one portion. Try adding grapes, raspberries or strawberries to your breakfast cereal, a banana at lunchtime, and 2 portions of vegetables with your main meal. Eat plenty of fibre rich foods, the recommended daily intake is 25g. If your natural diet does not contain enough fibre, swap your breakfast for a high fibre one, and consider taking a supplement which contains natural fibre, such as Psyllium husks. The recommended calorie intake is 2000 per day or 70g fat per day.
4. Protect Yourself from Harmful Free Radicals. Anti-oxidants absorb harmful free radicals that can damage cells and cause disease. You can buy supplements at a health food shop, and many supermarkets stock a good range of vitamins and supplements. Good anti-oxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, beta-carotene, pyconegol and lycopene.
5. Hormones and the Menopause. In most women, the menopause occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. At this time, the skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. Natural collagen is lost which can result in sagging of the skin, particularly around the jaw and neck. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or a natural alternative such as soy isoflavones can relieve menopause symptoms.
6. Use Quality Skin Care Products. Cleanse your facial skin twice a day with a product for your skin type. Use a skin firming moisturiser at night, and an SPF protection cream during the day. Some cleansers and other skin care products contain exfoliating ingredients which remove dead skin cells, help to keep wrinkles at bay and reveal a brighter, more youthful complexion. There are many anti-ageing skin care products available which will help you to look younger.
7. Stop Smoking. You only have to look at people who smoke to see how the effects of smoking make them age prematurely. Most smokers have more wrinkles than non-smokers. Also, their teeth are generally stained with nicotine which makes them look older than their years.
8. Smile! Finally, there is nothing better than a smile to lift your face instantly! Try not to worry about the small stuff, learn to enjoy what you have, and without yearning too much for what you do not have if it is not easily achievable.

Acne Myths, Finally Some Facts
Acne is a common skin condition, which can be extremely mild or quite disfiguring. Having had a rather bad case as a young adolescent, I know the kind of socially embarrassing consequences it can have for the victim but I also remember it being sore and painful, filling my life with discomfort. It lingered a long time until I went to a dermatologist who used a type of freezing process, mechanically removing excessive puss from the lesions in relatively non-painful way. There were also topical notions. The result was total success, without scarring.
Until I went to a dermatologist, though, there was little or no gain in getting rid of this foul condition. I, like other children, were subject to disturbing concepts of its origins. Although this was a long time ago, these myths have stayed around- often causing grave delays in seeking treatment.
One of the myths is that acne is caused by everyday dirt and surface oil on the skin and that the solution is frequent and vigorous washing of the skin. Vigorous washing of the face to cure acne is a myth. The fact is- the problems that have caused chronic acne are deeper, beneath the skin’s surface and that only a mild washing of the face is in order, often accompanied with specific solutions prescribed for treating the acne by a dermatologist. Vigorous washing of the face, particularly with harsh soaps, can lead to a further irritation of the tissue. There is, in part, a bacteriological condition that contributes to acne and it is below the surface.
Another idea is that acne is caused by stress. Scientific research seems to indicate that stress alone probably does not lead to acne, but it may be aggravated by stress. But, unfortunately, acne can result from certain prescriptions that are used to treat stress. So, if you are on certain drugs related to stress, you should certain talk to your dermatologist, the appropriate type of physician for dealing with this problem. According to Doctor James Fulton, a pioneer in the treatment of acne, lithium, a substance sometimes used in profound psychological disorders, can aggravate an acne condition.
Another myth that can lead to profoundly unpleasant consequences is that one should let acne run its course, “grow out of it.” As I myself know too well, acne can linger for years and get worse and worse. At the end of my experience, my acne was very disfiguring and covered my whole face and part of my neck. It was hard to keep my hands off this uncomfortable, scaly, itchy and sore condition. I was certainly a candidate for scarring. I had a kind of skin emergency and I am glad that my parents were smart enough and lucky enough to get me to the right place at the right time.
Can acne be the consequence of poor nutrition? I think the jury may be out on this one, but, for myself, I came to believe that my excessive eating of chocolate and a lot of sugar products were contributing factors to my acne. But, in my case, I did not see any correlation before my medical treatment and it was clearly medical intervention that helped me. There are certainly many naturopathically oriented practitioners and some medical doctors that share this view, though. Not everything in medicine is a hundred percent clear cut and every acne victim should certainly research all the alternatives.

Contact Lenses For Computer Users
Most occupations today involve the use of computers. It is estimated that over 143 million Americans use computers each day, and of these around 88% suffer from computer related discomforts. It is also estimated that over 54 million children use computers every day, in schools and at home. As our eyes are not suitable for continuously staring at the computer screen, many have developed Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
CVS is the number-one workplace disability, a collection of muscle and eye-related symptoms, with over 75% of all computer users suffering some form of this vision-related disorder. Even people who normally wear glasses or contact lenses in their routine lives find it difficult to focus for long hours on the computer screens.
Contact Lenses For Dry Eyes
People concentrate a lot while working at their computers, and blink less frequently. This can lead to severe discomfort for contact lens users, as not blinking for longer periods can cause the surface of their contact lenses to dry out. Dry eye syndrome, due to lack of blinking in contact lens wearers, can cause blurring and discomfort to them. According to studies, computer users blink around three times less than they normally should. For contact lens wearers, it is advisable that they blink once every 4 to 5 seconds to keep their lens from drying.
Other than the lack of blinking, some types of contact lenses can also cause dry eye syndrome. Generally, soft contact lenses are made of polymers and water, with up to 70% water at times. You feel comfortable as long as the lens is moist, but as the day progresses the water evaporates. The lens absorbs the tears from the eyes to remain moist, but leaves you with a feeling of dry eyes. It is known that the more water the lens contains, the more it is prone to lose its moisture.
As this is a serious problem with contact lens wearers, and more so with those spending hours in front of the computer, many manufacturers are constantly trying to produce contact lenses that will be comfortable for people with dry eyes. One way, it whas been found, is to reduce the water content of the lens. Some people have responded well to the new hydrogel contact lenses. Modern silicon hydrogel lenses are only about 30% water – which is much less than the 50% to 60% of traditional lenses, and the 70% of soft contact lenses. In addition, the new polymers used in the contact lenses keep the lens moist.
Such contact lenses are a boon for computer users, as they will help avoid dry eye syndrome.
Computer Users And Contact Lenses
Dry eye is a common disorder, caused by the deficiency of tears in the eyes, or by excessive tear evaporation. Dry eyes are associated with a number of causes, such as drug use, inflammation, allergic reactions, and contact lens use. Dry eyes often cause contact lens intolerance. People normally suffering from mild dry eyes may not feel any discomfort until they wear contact lenses, and the discomfort increases with the hours spent in front of the computer.
Some doctors recommend switching to Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses for those who spend hours working on the computer with their dry eye syndrome. RGP contact lenses are made from polymeric materials and do not contain any water. This is unlike soft lenses, and so water will not evaporate from their surface.
One major advantage of RGP contact lenses is that they do not block oxygen flow to your corneas, as they are gas permeable. This is healthy for your eyes as lack of oxygen can cause serious eye problems, including inflammation of the cornea. Another advantage is that as they contain no moisture, they do not dry out. Therefore, they may be ideal for those working in conditions, such as in front of their computers, where there is a chance of dry eye syndrome.
A computer user with contact lenses with an ophthalmic prescription for nearsightedness – that is for distant viewing – may require either a separate set, or glasses, for extended mid-range VDT use. There are lenses available with tints, to reduce the glare of the VDT screens. The tints used by the computer users can affect either the perceived brightness, or the perceived color, or both.
Let us look at what you can do with your contact lenses to combat your dry eye syndrome while working long hours on your computer:
Use Re-wetting Drops – Though a temporary solution, it does offer relief. If you have sensitive eyes, look for preservative free drops.Re-soak Lenses – After working for a few hours on your computer, remove your contact lenses, soak them for a few minutes and put them back. You will experience relief from dryness symptoms, and will be able to continue for a few more hours.Cleaning Lenses – You need to take good care of your lenses, by cleaning them properly. This will add to your comfort, as protein deposits, and other build up such as lipids etc, can contribute to dryness. Insert new lenses as often as prescribed, or change to a better and stronger lens cleaning system. Increase Blinking – This is the most important thing you can do if you spend many hours in front of your computer. Blinking often, rewets the lenses and increases the comfort level. Lack of proper blinking is the main reason for the dryness of eyes of computer users. You need to make a conscious effort to blink frequently.Switch To Different Contact Lenses – If you wish, you can still switch to a different brand of contact lenses. It is said that effective contact lenses for computer users are those that are made of the newer, more oxygen permeable silicone hydrogel materials.
If you have dry eyes and your current contact lenses do not feel too comfortable, There is no need to live with the discomfort. You can consult your doctor and switch to ones that will give you comfort while working on your computer.

Face Lift
A face-lift, known in the medical sciences as ‘rhytidectomy,’ is the most popular surgical way of erasing – or at least reducing – wrinkles and facial sagging, usually because of age. There is a reason it is called a ‘face lift.’ The facial skin is literally lifted off the face, and the surgeon tightens the skin tissues underneath, and then repositions the tightened skin over the face.
What to expect during and after a face lift procedure
If you are planning to get a face lift, expect massive anesthesia. The face-lift surgery will usually take several hours – especially if the surgeon is removing fat from your skin. Do not worry too much about scarring, because the incision will be made on the hairline, where it is less noticeable. It is advisable to spend at least one day in the hospital after a face-lift.
You will not readily see your face after surgery. Typically, you need to wait about one to two days for the bandage and the drainage tube to be removed. You will still see a lot of stitching. Only after five days to a week will the surgeon take out your stitches.
Expect to feel some discomfort and pain after surgery, but it’s usually mild and can be treated by simple pain relievers that your doctor will prescribe. Use cold compresses for swelling, and avoid moving your head too much. You must not smoke for about a month after surgery, because this significantly slows down your skin’s healing progression.
Some risks
As in any surgical procedure, a face lift has risks. Your body may react against the anesthesia. You could also get an infection, or possibly damage your facial muscles. Some patients experience bleeding under the skin, while others suffer from hair loss. Be sure to talk to your cosmetic surgeon about all these concerns before deciding to go under the knife.

Pilates
Pilates is a wonderful system of exercise and strength training developed by Joseph Pilates. In recent years, it has become one of the most popular exercise systems in the world. Pilates studios have opened in cities all over America and beyond. Pilates training consists of over 500 individual exercises, all designed to help the individual develop core strength, flexibility, and balance.
There is also a system of philosophy that is integral to Pilates practice, known as mind/body fitness. It is very similar to Yoga or Tai Chi, in that it promotes a system of overall wellness based upon developing health from the inside-out. The purpose is to learn how to develop one’s mental ability in order to effectively control movement, and therefore achieve balance in body and mind.
The Pilates system teaches that effective exercise is based upon quality and not quantity. Each of the exercises is designed to focus on a core set of muscles. Most of the movements are performed slowly and with focused intent. Students are taught to view their bodies as integrated systems comprised of interrelated parts. In the practice of Pilates, focus is placed on coordinating muscles and improving joint flexibility. Pilates teaches the individual to work with their body, as opposed to against it.
Pilates exercise can benefit most anyone. Exercise can be adapted to accommodate people, regardless of their current physical state. Most students begin with an introductory mat work course. This course can be done in private, semi-private, or group classes. As the student progresses, exercises become more focused and advanced. There are also a number of equipment classes available for advanced students. These classes teach the proper use of equipment such as the Reformer or the Cadillac.
If you are looking for an exercise program that will help you build core strength, flexibility, and balance, then look no further than Pilates. People of all ages and physical conditions can benefit from these exercises. Pilates has helped countless people achieve balance in their lives. It comes highly recommended by physical therapists, athletic trainers, and fitness experts as a highly effective training and rehabilitation method. The future of your health is now.

Water Help To Lose Weight – Three Proven Methods That Can Help You Lose Weight
Does taking in large amounts of water help to loss weight? Losing weight is not rocket science. It’s simply a matter of taking in less calories each day than you’re using, or burning more calories than you’re using. This means that if during the course of your regular daily activities you are burning 3,000 calories, then you’ll want to eat foods that add up to less than that amount.
For example, if it’s determined that a person of your size uses that amount of calories each day, then putting yourself on a diet that only allowed you 2,000 calories per day would put you on course to lose two pounds per week. How, you ask? Because it takes 3,500 calories to either gain or lose one pound of fat. By reducing you caloric intake by 1,000 calories daily for seven days you’ll have lost 7,000 calories from your body, or 3,500 x 2 = two pounds.
Drinking plenty of water is an essential part of your daily routine. It helps to flush your system and is better for you than any other liquid beverage on the planet for maintaining good health. Drinking a big glass of water before you eat a meal is not a bad idea. Keep in mind though that even if you’re dieting you’ll still need to get the proper nutrients in your body, so don’t substitute water for too many meals.
You could fast one day per week and drink nothing but water. This will not only help you to lose weight but you’ll also help to flush your system out. Everyone, dieting or not, should fast from time to time.
Summary – If you’re wondering if water will help you to loss weight, yes it can, but don’t abuse it. Cut your calories, drink water and begin an exercise program. Doing these three things can rapidly speed up your weight loss and you’ll be doing it the healthy way.

The 12 Most Contaminated Fruits and Vegetables
We know that pesticides are definitely dangerous to human health. We also know
that one of the best things we can do to avoid pesticides is to consume organic
food. However, this isn’t always possible due to several restraints: availability, price,
etc.
There’s another thing we can do, however, to reduce our pesticide exposure: avoid
the fruits and vegetables that are the most contaminated.
When organic is not available, eat fruits and vegetables with consistently low
pesticide loads.
It’s been shown that you can lower your pesticide exposure simply by avoiding the
top 12 most contaminated types of fruit and vegetables, and eating the least
contaminated instead.
Eating the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables will expose a person to
nearly 20 pesticides per day, on average. Eating the 12 least contaminated will
expose a person to a fraction over 2 pesticides per day.
—————————————————————
The Black List
—————————————————————
So, what are the most contaminated fruits and vegetables? Here’s the black list,
according to the most recent data analysed:
—> The top 4 are fruits, in the following order:
#1 (Most Contaminated): Peach
#2: Strawberry
#3: Apple
#4: Nectarine
—> The other highly contaminated fruits in the top 12 are:
#5 Pears
#6 Cherrie
#7 Red raspberries
#8 Imported grapes (Chile, Mexico, etc.)
Some of these fruits, such as peaches and nectarines and raspberries, can contain
up to 45 different pesticides! Overall, studies show that those fruits have a high
chance of being contaminated with a good number of different pesticide residues.
As for the vegetables, those that are the most likely to expose you to pesticide
residues are:
#1 Celery
#2 Spinach
#3 Potatoes
#4 Sweet Bell Pepper
Those vegetables have a high chance of containing pesticide residues, some of them
containing several!
—————————————————————
The Least Contaminated Produce
—————————————————————
—> Now, for the “good” vegetables, here’s the top, least contaminated, in order of
purity:
- Sweet corn
- Avocado
- Cauliflower
- Asparagus
- Onions
- Peas
- Broccoli
—> The least contaminated fruits are:
- Pineapples
- Mangoes
- Bananas
- Kiwi
- Papaya
Very few mangoes and pineapple have pesticide residues on them, and when they
do they usually contain only one type. Bananas do often contain pesticide residues,
but rarely multiple ones.
—————————————————————
Conclusion
—————————————————————
To avoid pesticides, the best thing is to consume organic foods. When that is not
possible, select the foods that have the least pesticides on them, and avoid those on
the “black list.”
—> Other importance tricks to help reduce our pesticide exposure:
* Peel non-organic fruits, whenever possible*: That means pears, apples, etc. I know
many nutritionists say that the peel contains the most vitamins, but it isn’t quite
true. The peel of fruits is indigestible, so even though it may contain many vitamins,
they are not assimilated as well as the vitamins in the flesh of the fruits.
*Wash your produce with a non-toxic soap*. You can buy a non-toxic soap for
washing produce in most health food stores. Use this soap to wash your non-
organic peaches, or other fruits if you happen to buy them.
Remember however that eating non-organic fruits and vegetables is still better than
drinking organic beer or eating organic pizza!
