How I Lost 40 Pounds in Six Weeks!

It was the happiest day of my life! I was running down the
concourse of the airport to catch my plane to a new life –
in the Air Force. I felt free and alive for the first time
in my life.

At first the Air Force didn’t want me, because I was overweight!

But I did it! I lost the weight! I went from 165 pounds to
125 pounds. I made it! I felt fantastic! A whole new wardrobe
of sizes 10’s and 11’s were waiting for me.

I lost 40 pounds in six weeks eating–only protein and drinking
lots of water.

I drank a lot of water and took multi-vitamin pills.
I kept busy looking for a job, playing golf, swimming,

and drawing. In the mornings I did 15 sit-ups and 50
running in place. There was one consolation about not
eating, no food bills. MacDonald’s was next door.
Smelling those Big Mac’s drove me crazy.

I was feeling much better about myself and saw the difference.
My clothes were getting baggy and lose. The high protein diet
was made for me, because I loved meat, eggs, cheese, and fish.

Two scrambled eggs (no butter), with tea made a good breakfast.
I mixed tuna and shrimp. Some chicken, cheese, a hard boiled

egg was another meal. A piece of cheese melted
between two thin broiled hamburger patties was a
favorite of mine. I had some cottage cheese with it.
A take home box of chicken would last for three
meals. I took the skin off. Plus I drank 8-10
glasses of water a day.

Then I had to wait six months before going active duty. During
that summer I had a great time; biking, hiking, swimming, golfing.
I ate fresh fruits, vegetables, and watched what I ate. I was
full of energy. I lost some more weight.

And during basic training, I lost even more weight. All that
marching and running around, then eating military food! I was
115 pounds!

The key to the whole thing was I wanted it bad enough to make
any diet work! I don’t recommend the protein diet to anyone. It
was mine. You have to find your own, and I’m willing to help you.

I use to be shy, backward, naive, and very heavy, 165 pounds
at 5 foot 4 inches tall.

My life changed forever. I have been studying nutrition and
fitness since, and now as a Wellness Coach I help others do the
same.

Laser Hair Removal in New York

May 31, 2005 by admin · Leave a Comment

If you have been thinking about laser hair removal and finally
decided to take a step to a hair-free body, you should know you
are among millions. Although you want the result to be smooth
skin, getting there requires some research. Keep in mind that
different skin types react different to laser treatment.
Therefore, with laser hair removal or any cosmetic procedure for
that matter, understanding the process is to your benefit.

Even though laser hair removal in New York has been performed
for many years and the process is considered quick and safe, it
is still a medical procedure per se. Therefore, you should take
laser treatments seriously. One of the most important things to
keep in mind is that people with darker skin do not have much
success. In fact, some of the spas and clinics offer laser hair
removal in New York will recommend the individual go through a
bleaching if they want to undergo the treatment. However, prior
to any laser procedure being performed, a minimum of two weeks
should pass after bleaching.

In addition, laser hair removal works best on short, visible
hair. For this reason, another recommendation made by
professionals is to shave one to three days prior to laser
treatment. The exact time will depend on the type of hair you
have and the rate at which it grows. However, the doctor or
technician can advise you during the consultation. Then, some
people should no have laser treatment until existing conditions
are treated. In this case, individuals with skin acne, genital
herpes, or cold sores need to be medically cared for first.
Again, this information would be addressed during the
consultation.

Obviously, with the cost of laser hair removal in New York being
so high, you want it to work. For this reason, making sure you
work with a professional will give you the best chance.
Permanent hair removal cannot be guaranteed although permanent
reduction can be. Therefore, this should be your first clue
when shopping around for the right option. If you find someone
promising that he or she can get rid of hair forever, you know
it is a scam.

A reputable doctor or technician would be upfront, telling you
if the procedure would or would not help you. During your
consultation, you should have a clear understanding if laser
treatment will have any effect. After all, people with light or
fair skin seldom have lasting results so spending hundreds of
dollars would be wasted. The good news is that if you were a
good candidate, you will likely find yourself walking a little
taller once excessive hair is eliminated.

Although finding a qualified spa or clinic for laser hair
removal in New York is of the utmost importance, so is taking
all the necessary precautions. As mentioned in this article,
you need to disclose information to ensure the treatment works
but also is safe. If you end up being someone that would
benefit from laser treatment, the process should be painless.
You will notice hair regrowth but not for months and even then,
the hair’s texture would be finer. If done right, the laser
hair removal treatment should cause little reason to complain.

Acne Treatments – An Overview Of Acne Treatments

To treat acne, one has to address the cause of acne. Acne is caused by

1. The blocking of the gland
2. Presence of bacterium P.acnes,
3. Excess Sebum Production
4. Hormonal imbalance
5. Use of comedogenic products and any other reason.

All the medications work towards removing some of these causes. The choice of medication depends upon the severity of acne and the possible reason of its formation. Hormonal treatment may be used for women who get acne due to hormonal imbalance. Antibiotics may be used if the acne is infected. Thus one has to use the medication depending upon the cause.

The common methods of acne treatments are-

Topical creams, gels, liquids etc.
Oral medicines that include antibiotics, Isotretinoin and others
Physical and surgical procedures
Light and laser therapy
Skin care for quicker cure etc.

The most common method to treat acne is use of topical medication. Benzoyl Peroxide is one of the most popular medicines. Oral medications are used when acne gets difficult to manage with topical treatment and the infection increases. Antibiotics are commonly used to control the infection.

Physical and surgical procedures include draining of acne and extraction of comedones. Light is used to kill the bacteria P. canes. Laser is also used to treat acne. But light and lasers are not very popular. The most popular method is to treat acne topically.

Skin Care for acne treatment-

Not picking acne, avoiding over washing of the skin, reducing sun exposure and use of sunscreens, using non-comedogenic skin care products and cosmetics are some of the steps that help treat acne faster. It is always better to be patient while treating acne. Frequent change of medication does not help treatment.

Headache – Causes and Treatment Options

May 31, 2005 by admin · Leave a Comment

Everyone gets a headache from time to time. Some get them more often than others do. There are several different types of headache and there are many factors that can trigger the onset of a headache. Some medications even list “headache” as a side affect. Some headaches can be the side affects of a more serious medical problem.

There are many different causes of the common headache. These causes include, but are not limited to, meningitis, glaucoma, temporal arteritis and brain tumor. There are very few illnesses that never show headache as a symptom. A high fever can also cause headache, as well as irritability and aggression. Headaches often occur after suffering a head injury, violent coughing, sneezing, or straining and (most commonly in males) occur after sex.

Headache is a term used to describe the pain in the face, neck and sometimes, upper back and shoulder area. The brain tissue and skull do not actually feel any pain. This is due to the lack of pain sensitive fibers. The nerves surrounding the scalp, face and neck are pain sensitive, however. This is what you feel when you experience a headache. It is believed that a headache develops because the blood vessels surrounding the head and face become irritated or tense.

There are several different types of headache, however, there are four main types. These types are vascular, tension, traction and inflammatory. Each type of headache has a distinct pain and reactions can vary from person to person.

Migraine is the most common of the vascular headaches. It is characterized by intense pain on one or both sides of the head. Migraines can also cause nausea or even vomiting. In some rare cases, disrupted vision can occur. Migraine headaches are more common in women than in men. Headache produced by fever, otherwise known as “toxic” headache, is the second most common of the vascular headache. Recurring headaches that cause intense pain are often called cluster headaches and they are also vascular headaches.

Tension headaches occur when the muscles in the face and neck tighten or tense up. The pain associated with this tightening can manifest itself in the forehead. Traction and inflammatory headaches are often symptoms of other conditions. These conditions can range from sinus infection to something as serious as stroke.

Headaches, like many other symptoms, can be warning signals for some other, more serious condition. Sudden, intense headache or headache conjoined with stiff neck call for immediate medical attention. Other headaches that call for this type of medical attention are headaches that associate with fever, convulsions, or unconsciousness. Headache interrelated with eye or ear pain, intense headache suffered by someone who has no previous history of headache and persistent headache in children can also be warning signs of a more serious condition.

Headaches can be treated many different ways. Not all headaches require medical attention. Some physicians recommend adding more exercise to your daily routine or removing certain foods from your diet. Stress management can also aid in the reduction of headaches, especially migraine. Over the counter drugs, which contain acetaminophen or paracetamol, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, tylenol and advil can help reduce the pain associated with headache. If headaches occur more than three times a month, treatment and prevention methods are usually recommended. If you have severe, recurring headache, consult your doctor.

Sleep Disorders – Learn the Facts

May 30, 2005 by admin · Leave a Comment

If you have tried every remedy possible to get to sleep, from cutting out caffeine to setting a bedtime routine, you may need to see your doctor, who can help to solve the mystery of the sleepless nights. Diagnosing sleep disorders in people is often a difficult thing for doctors to do, because everyone goes through periods of not sleeping well during some part of their life. Here are some of the most common sleep disorders and signs that indicate you are suffering from this sleep disorder, and whether you should consult your doctor or not.

Snoring is probably one of the biggest sleep disorders that people suffer from. Snoring, while not dangerous, can be really disturbing for the sufferers and their family. We all know at least one person that we won’t invite over as a guest, because when we do, we all can’t get a good night’s sleep due to the snoring that resonates out of the guest bedroom. We all know what snoring sounds like, but what causes it? Snoring is caused when the airways are not opened enough. If you suffer from snoring, don’t worry because it is one of the simplest sleep disorders to cure (and if it doesn’t bother you, you can simply live with). If you want to try to cure your snoring by yourself, the experts recommend that you lose any excess weight. Being the ideal weight will allow your airways to open up more, and may solve the problem. Other things to avoid are alcohol, sleeping on your back and sleeping at irregular times.

Another sleep disorder that affects millions of Americans every year is insomnia. Insomnia is not being able to sleep, even though you are tired, the lights are out, and no one is making a lot of noise. If you experience a bout of insomnia, you should know that you are not alone. If it lasts a long time, you should see your doctor, because there are many different drugs that could work to solve this problem. If you don’t want to use a prescription or non-prescription drug, there are several remedies that you can try that are natural, for example deep breathing and herbs, such as valerian root.

If your snoring is really loud, it may be a sign of a more serious (and less common) problem: sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where your airways are constricted and the sufferer can actually stop breathing for several seconds. Sleep apnea can be a very dangerous condition, and can cause other problems if left untreated, such as high blood pressure and other heart problems. If you think that you or your spouse has sleep apnea, you should definitely talk to your doctor today.

Snoring and sleep apnea are sleep disorders that affect men more often than women. One of the few sleep disorders that hits women more than men is restless leg syndrome. This syndrome makes falling to sleep difficult, because the sufferer has the urge to move their legs. There is no cure for restless leg syndrome that works for every sufferer, but sometimes it is caused by other conditions, such as diabetes or vitamin deficiencies. Often, curing these problems and getting enough exercise will solve the problem of having a leg that doesn’t want to stay still.

The list of sleep disorders is long, and if you are suffering from any sleep disorder, the first step to solving this frustrating situation is get as much information about the disorder. With some knowledge, your doctor’s help, and support from your family friends, you can get a great night’s sleep and wake up refreshed.

How To Relief Heartburn With GERD Diet

May 30, 2005 by admin · Leave a Comment

For many heartburn sufferers, the condition they dread is GERD, which is the more severe version of heartburn. GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. In GERD the stomach acidic levels are very high. Therefore when they reflux into the esophagus this leads to burning inflammations for the esophagus.

With an easy change in your lifestyle as well as the way you eat, you have the ability to relieve the nastiest effects of GERD. This change is called the GERD diet, and you’ll find that the GERD diet is very simple to follow.

Avoid tomatoes and citrus fruits, and drinking coffee. Chocolates, onions, peppermints and food with a high fat level should be avoided also. The high fat content affects the pressure level inside your stomach. You might also want to check your usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

There are also a few simple GERD diet tips that you want to ponder following. Try and avoid taking large meals at bed time. Eat several small meals throughout the day. Discontinue the use of all tobacco and nicotine products. Do not wear tight clothes as they push against the stomach walls forcing the food into the LES. Sleep with your head raised higher than your body. Being overweight can also result in GERD, hence losing weight can help you on the GERD diet.

There are also some alternative foods that you can have while you are on a GERD diet. Instead of drinking whole milk you should try fat free milk or 1%-2%milk. Leave acid causing tomatoes out of your diet. Other vegetables are considered to be good on the GERD diet. Everybody loves fruits, but GERD diet followers ought to avoid grapefruit, oranges, lemons, limes and pineapples. You can eat chicken and other meat low in fats. Do stay away from bacon and processed meats like cold cuts.

Apart from these foods, there are also some drinks that you might have instead. Try some decaffeinated coffee instead. Have some herbal teas for a change, in place of your usual cup of tea. You can have fruit drinks (stay away from citrus based drinks) without digging into a carbonated fizzy drink. The other beverage to shun is alcohol in all its forms. That means no wines, beers or even coolers.

While you are following the GERD diet you should consider supplementing your nutritional intake with some calcium, magnesium, and potassium supplements. These minerals are known to have an alkalizing effect on your body by binding up the stomach acid.

Herbal medicines like Aloe Vera, Chamomile and Papaya Leaf help in aiding digestion. Aloe Vera helps in the healing of the intestinal tract and Chamomile is said to relieve esophageal irritation.

As you can see the GERD diet isn’t too hard to follow whilst still leaving you with a wide variety of ‘tasty’ foods to eat. Besides which, if you have GERD, isn’t it better not to suffer?

The Weight Loss Wonder Drug

May 30, 2005 by admin · Leave a Comment

The new FDA-approved weight loss drug Alli became available to the public by June 15th 2007. Perhaps by the time you read this article you will have already heard about it or even seen it on the shelves. This product may be purchased without a prescription from a physician. That’s right – an over the counter weight loss drug.

How does it work?

Alli is a 60mg orlistat capsule that essentially blocks up to 25% the fat you eat from being absorbed into your body. The claim is that combining Alli with a low calorie, low fat diet one can lose up to 50% more weight loss than through dieting alone. In short, if the fat from food is not broken down and absorbed into your body, it passes through instead of eventually adding to your waistline.

The example they give is “instead of losing 10 pounds with diet alone, you can lose 15 pounds with the Alli program.”

What are the side effects?

Of course the first question I had as a fitness professional, and a human being, was what are the side effects of such a product?

My ill will toward this product instantly grew as I learned that not only are the side effects, in my humble opinion, not worth the benefit of sparing some time it would normally take to lose the same amount of weight if you ate sensibly anyway – but the side effects are conveniently renamed “treatment effects”.

Maybe a treatment effect is the new P.C. way of verbalizing side effects.

An extreme, yet accurate analogy would be if ephedra was put back in to certain weight loss and energy aids and the possible “treatment effects” were that of abnormal changes in blood pressure and heart attack.

The following side effect information can be found in the marketing literature and on the Alli website.

1. Gas with oily spotting

2. Loose stools

3. More frequent stools that may be hard to control

More explanation is offered with:

“You may not usually get gassy, but it’s a possibility when you take Alli. The bathroom is really the best place to go when that happens.”

“The excess fat that passes out of your body is not harmful. In fact, you may recognize it as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza.”

Here are my top 6 questions about Alli:

1. Who wants those side effects if they are dieting anyway and can avoid them?

2. What happens if someone does reach their weight loss goals with Alli and then proceed to stop? Do they gain the weight back 50% faster?

3. Does this program not give free license to over eaters or people with poor nutritional habits to continue the same self defeating behaviors…if they don’t mind a little “pizza oil” in their pants?

4. Could this drug not be abused by people suffering with laxative bulimia?

5. Why should we play into the hands of our fast paced, quick fix, I want it all and I want it yesterday society?

6. What is stopping kids from getting their hands on this and overusing Alli to drop weight for high school athletics or to fit into that prom dress?

Those are just a few of my concerns. Although this article has a negative vibe toward Alli, I do believe it could help some people. I believe a drug like this, although FDA-approved, should be a prescription medication only.

Over the past 15 years of training, logging in thousands of hours helping people just like you reach their weight loss goals – there has NEVER been a short cut that has a.) Been worth it or b.) Lasted over time.

There is no substitute for hard ward and eating soundly. Having sound nutrition does not have to be a chore and we are always coming up with new and innovative ways to train more effectively.

Please take this article for what it is – informative. I trust you will make the right decision and I am confident that when you do you will reach your fitness goals.

Home Remedies For Cold Sores And Canker Sores

First, it is important to establish that canker sores and cold sores are not the same. You must be able identify which is which in order to use the right home remedies and cut down the healing time of the blister.

Canker sores are painful sores that appear in the month. Either in the cheeks, inside your lips, under your tongue or on your gums. Doctors are not sure what causes canker sores, but stress, allergies, bad nutrition or menstrual periods can all trigger canker sores. Women in their teens to late 20’s usually get them more often but anyone can get them. The pain of a canker sores usually decreases within 7 to 10 days and completely heals within 2 to 3 weeks.

Cold sores or fever blisters appear when you contract the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of the virus, type 1 which appear on the face and type 2 which appear in the genital area. Cold sores are identified by there location and appearance. Usually found on or at the edge of the lips and on the face near the lips. There appearance is first visible as a fluid filled blister then when the blister burst they form a brownish crust accompanied by itching and burning. If the crust cracks it usually bleed.

Cold sores usually appear after a cold or flu. When the immune system is weak the simplex virus causes an outbreak. The life of a cold sore is usually 10 to 14 days but you can significantly reduce that time with some good old fashioned home remedies.

One of the best home remedies for cold sores is simply to apply a warm and moist black tea bag over the cold sore for 5 minutes every hour. Use a tea that contains tannic acid.

For canker sores rinse the mouth with 1 tsp. potassium chlorate mixed with 1 cup water. Repeat 2 to 3 times daily. For immediate pain relief use ibuprofen or acetaminophen accompanied by anbesol or oragel.

Say No to Acid Reflux

May 29, 2005 by admin · Leave a Comment

Many of you might be suffering from acid reflux to some extent or the other. When it happens during night hours, then the stomach gas and fluids disturb the sleeping pattern.

Acid reflux or GERD (Gastro esophageal reflux disease) occurs when the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) relaxes and gives way to fluids and gases in the stomach to move upwards into the esophagus. LES opens up so as to allow the food enter into the stomach and then closes but it is when this LES is too relaxed or damaged then it causes acid reflux.

Poor eating habits could be a major cause for acid reflux. Eatables such as sauce, raw onion or garlic, coffee or alcohol when remain indigested, leads to acid reflux. Certain natural herbs and supplements and even medicines help in getting rid of the problem.

Chronic indigestion can be caused by a lack of hydrochloric acid. Some people produce insufficient amounts of stomach acid as they grow older. Besides the proper digestion of food, hydrochloric acid is necessary to keep harmful bacteria.

Medicines such as nexium are quite effective in treating GERD because it contains esomeprazole as the active ingredient which is a proton pump inhibitor. It works while inhibiting the action of proton pumps and thereby reducing the production of the stomach acid.

Since it relieves the symptoms of stomach cancer, it could be advised to go for a proper examination before starting the treatment if your doctor suspects a stomach ulcer. Moreover, it should not be used for children, women who are breast-feeding and some other cases of intolerance to fructose or absorbing glucose in the diet.

There could be certain side effects of the medicines such as headaches, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, vomiting or abdominal pain, formation of excess gas in the stomach, skin allergies, dry mouth, joint or muscle pains, depression, dizziness, swelling of the legs, confusion, or insomnia.

Cleansing Liver Herbal Teas

When spring comes it is time for a liver cleanse. This is a good time to rejuvenate the liver for the coming year of work. One good way to cleanse the liver is to use herbal teas. They are easy to use and they provide a powerful punch to reawaken the liver.

Here is a herbal formulation for the liver provided by Brigitte Mars (herbalist in Colorado) called “Puri-Tea” which consist of:

* Peppermint, red clover, fennel, licorice

* cleavers, dandelion, oregon grape root, burdock root

* butternut bark, chickweed, parsley root, nettles.

Another liver herbal tea is:

* Fennel Seed (1 part), Fenugreek (1 part)

* Flax Seed (1 part), Licorice Root (1/4 part)

* Burdock (1/4 part), Peppermint (1 part).

Here’s another herbal combination that is good for detoxifying and cleansing the liver:

* Yellow Dock root, Dandelion root, Licorice root

* Red sage, Sarsaparilla, Hyssop

* Pau de Arco, Milk Thistle Seed, Parsley leaf.

Here’s something else you can do for you liver. Buy an extract of Milk Thistle Seed. Then when you make the liver tea’s list here, add 2-3 full droppers of the Milk Thistle Seed extract to the tea.
Here are the effects of some of the herbs listed above.

* fennel seed – white cell formation, acid/alkaline balancing

* peppermint – body cleanser and toner

* red clover – blood purifier

* licorice – adrenal stimulation

* cleavers – anti-infection

* dandelion – cleansing and strengthening

* oregon grape root – cleansing, building

* burdock root – purifying

* nettles – rich in minerals

* chickweed -

* fenugreek – helps to eliminate toxins and mucus

* yellow dock root – cleansing, white cell formation

* pau de arco – cleansing, white cell formation

* milk thistle seed – cleansing, building

You can make these teas yourself or look for a ready made one at a health food store. What I do is buy a 1/2 or 1 oz of each herb. Then I mix one full tablespoon of each herb into a mason jar. Shake it up and its ready to go.

Preparing the tea

Boil 1 1/4 cup of distilled water in a glass container. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of herbal mixture. Let tea sit for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink when it cools down a little.

Drink one cup of tea before breakfast and one before dinner for about 1-2 months.
